Bankhead National Forest

Amidst the hardwood and pine trees of the Bankhead National Forest is an unforgettable recreation experience waiting to be discovered. Explore more than 80 miles of exceptional trails, state-of-the-art campground facilities, primitive camping, places to boat or fish, big and small game hunting, bird watching, beaches for swimming and some of the best driving scenery in the South. With more than 180,000 acres located in northwest Alabama, including the 25,000 acre Sipsey Wilderness Area, the Bankhead offers a perfect get-away to nature. Experience the beauty of majestic trees, abundant wildlife, beautiful waterfalls, recreational attractions and history lessons in Alabama’s first national forest.

A highlight is a short hike to the Caney Creek Falls to see an example of Bankhead’s waterfalls and hemlock cove forests. Another outstanding adventure is a hike along the Sipsey Fork, a wild and scenic river.
