The Loyd Owens Canoe Trail was dedicated on September 10th, 1999 and is just a short drive from downtown Heflin. The trail is located on the Tallapoosa Rivers and runs from the Georgia state line in northern Cleburne County to Highway 431 in the southern part. The river teems with fish, including some rare species, ducks and other wildlife year round. Canoeists can expect to see sandbars, steep rocky banks, bridges and farms along the trail. A variety of plants including mountain laurel, native azaleas and countless others are found throughout the trail. Each season offers a unique tapestry of plant colors and textures. Nine access ramps located near major roads make canoe launching easy. Ramps are located about three to five hours apart, so canoeists can vary the length of their trip.
