This stately building, formerly the LaSalle Hotel & Motel, has housed the Monroe County Public Library since 1984. It is on the site of one of the oldest parcels that has been in continuous usage since it was part of a land grant (#8417) from the United States of America to Probate Judge Henry W. Taylor. During its tenure as a hotel, many dignitaries visited the LaSalle, including Academy Award winning actor, Gregory Peck, who visited Monroeville in preparation for his role as Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. It was also a favorite stop for the big bands that found their way to Monroeville to play at the Monroeville Community House for the Monroeville Cotillion Club. Today’s Monroe County Public Library contains fiction, non-fiction, biographies and large print books, as well as public access computers and a children’s library. In the summer, the library offers a Summer Reading Program. The library also has an Alabama Reading Room, dedicated to Alabama authors, a genealogy room, and an extensive forestry collection. The building is a Monroeville icon and a must -see for anyone visiting the area.
