Just a short drive outside of the city limits on Highway 78 headed west you will enter the Talladega National Forest. The Forest runs throughout Cleburne County and surrounds the city of Heflin. Featured in Cleburne County is the highest point in Alabama, Mt. Cheaha and just a short drive up Skyway Motorway you will find the first overlook where you can view the beautiful hills and see a glimpse of Heflin featuring the historic courthouse dome. This is a popular spot to watch the sunrise or visit as the sun is setting. The forest is filled with an abundance of wildlife including deer, turkey, and a variety of birds. Stop by the Shoal Creek Ranger station before your visit to pick up additional information on the forest and wildlife.
