Lustron houses are prefabricated enameled steel houses developed in response to the shortage of houses for GI’s returning from World War II. These homes contained enamel-coated steel panels on the inside and out, as well as steel framing. According to Lustron, this home would “defy weather, wear, and time.‚Äù The promise of a home that never needs painting or maintenance has been somewhat validated after over 60 years of service. The enamel steel roof “shingles‚Äù are still keeping many Lustron residents dry after six decades of no maintenance.
Lustron Corporation’s plant in Columbus, OH built around 2,500 of the Lustron prefabricated home units between 1948 and 1950 but only about 1200-1500 Lustron homes are still in existence today. Alabamians ordered twenty Lustron homes and less than 12 of these survive.
